Your rights at an Ontario repair shop

Vehicle repairs in Ontario are covered by consumer protection rules, and they work in your favour if you know them.

  • Written estimate. For repairs over $50 a shop must give you an estimate before starting work, unless you waive it in writing.
  • The 10% rule. The final bill cannot exceed the estimate by more than 10% without your authorisation.
  • Your old parts. You are entitled to ask for the replaced parts back, which is the simplest way to confirm work was actually done.
  • Warranty. Repairs generally carry a minimum warranty on parts and labour. Ask what it covers and get it on the invoice.

How to pick a shop

  • Ask whether the technician is a certified 310S automotive service technician; you can check certification on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register.
  • Get the estimate itemised — parts, labour hours, shop supplies and taxes as separate lines.
  • Ask whether parts are OEM, aftermarket or used, and how that changes the warranty.
  • For anything major, a second estimate is normal and shops expect it.
  • Read reviews for patterns, not for single bad experiences: repeated complaints about upselling or work not authorised are the signal.

Seasonal timing in Ontario

Winter tire changeover demand peaks sharply in late October and November, and again in April. Booking two to three weeks ahead is the difference between choosing your shop and taking whatever is available. Many Ontario insurers offer a winter tire discount — worth asking your insurer before the season, not after.

Can a shop charge more than the estimate?

Not by more than 10% without your authorisation. If the shop finds additional work is needed, it has to contact you and get approval before proceeding. Approve changes in writing — by text or email — so there is a record.

What is a safety standards certificate?

An inspection certificate issued by a licensed Motor Vehicle Inspection Station, required when registering a used vehicle in Ontario or bringing a vehicle in from another province. It reflects the vehicle’s condition on the day of inspection and is not a warranty.
