Who is allowed to do what in Ontario

This is the part most worth understanding before booking, because the rules differ sharply by service.

  • Injectables are a medical procedure. Botox and dermal fillers may only be administered by a regulated health professional — a physician or nurse practitioner, or a nurse working under a physician’s delegation. Ask directly who performs the injection and what their registration is, and confirm it with the relevant Ontario college.
  • Massage therapy has a protected title. Only registrants of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario may call themselves Registered Massage Therapists. This matters if you plan to claim through insurance, which generally requires an RMT.
  • Salons and studios are inspected. Personal service settings — hair, nails, lashes, waxing, tattoo and piercing — fall under local public health inspection. Many Ontario public health units publish inspection results online, and it is reasonable to look yours up.

What to check before you book

  • Portfolio of work on hair or skin similar to yours, not just the studio’s best-case photos.
  • A patch test at least 24–48 hours before colour, lash adhesive, tinting or a first chemical treatment.
  • Single-use or properly sterilised tools, and new files and buffers for nails.
  • The full price before you sit down, including the cost of removal, correction or a follow-up appointment.
  • Deposit and cancellation terms, which are common for longer appointments.
  • For injectables: the product being used, the dose, who is administering it and what happens if you have a reaction.

Is a patch test really necessary?

For hair colour, lash adhesive and tinting, yes — allergic reactions to these are not rare and can be severe. A reputable studio will offer one without being asked, particularly for a first visit. If a salon dismisses the request, that is useful information about the salon.

Can a beautician give Botox in Ontario?

No. Injecting Botox or fillers is a controlled medical act and must be performed by a regulated health professional. A clinic may employ an esthetician for other services while a physician or nurse handles injections — ask specifically who will be performing yours.
